WHAT DO HYGIENISTS DO & WHAT CAN I EXPECT DURING MY APPOINTMENT?
What Does A Hygienist Do?DID YOU KNOW THAT IT’S NATIONAL DENTAL HYGIENISTS WEEK?
When we learned that it was #NationalDentalHygienistsWeek we jumped with excitement to celebrate our rock-star hygienist, Paula. Soon we realized that Hygienists are celebrated during the second week of April in Canada, while down here in the US, dental hygienists have the month of October dedicated to them…
Even better! Multiple chances to celebrate the hard work that hygienists do and to share info about the importance of these professionals in our dental office. As you might know Dr. Pawlowski is originally from Canada, so it only feels right to celebrate both the holidays from above and below our northern border! It’s like getting Thanksgiving dinner twice 😉
WHAT IS THE ROLE OF A DENTAL HYGIENIST AT BELL HARBOUR DENTAL – PERIOINNOVATIONS IN DOWNTOWN SEATTLE, WA?
A dental hygienist is a licensed dental professional that assess the oral health of patients, assists the dentist and performs routine maintenance procedures such as taking x-rays, completing periodontal charting and performing cleanings. They also help patients stay on track with their dental hygiene program by helping them schedule appointments and reminding them when they are overdue for their routine checkups and cleanings.
Bell Harbour Dental – PerioInnovations is a highly unique dental clinic because we are home to a restorative, family practitioner as well as a periodontal gum and implant specialist. In other words, we have high standards for our hygienists and assistants in order for them to be able to support and integrate all aspects of our dynamic team.
Paula, our rock-star hygienist has worked closely with Dr. Pawlowski to cultivate the specialized periodontal skills and techniques of effectively cleaning teeth below the gum line. She is trained to be able to bring attention to the most subtle signs of periodontal disease, recommending remediation before it causes damage and unnecessarily expensive procedures.
Our periodontal hygienist is a keystone player in our approach to gum disease prevention and true long-term oral health. Paula’s patients rave about her extremely thorough cleanings, especially that they come with a gentle touch too!
Once treated for periodontal disease, Dr. Pawlowski is confident in Paula’s ability to maintain his patients hygiene program so that they are in the most top-notch care to prevent it from coming back. Many periodontal patients who already have a general dentist will alternate their visits in order to get maximum results from both their amazing family practitioner and our periodontal maintenance program.
HERE’S WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT DURING YOUR NEXT APPOINTMENT WITH A DOWNTOWN DENTAL HYGIENIST:
Discussing your medical history and inquiring about specific concerns or questions you have regarding your teeth & mouth. It is our utmost importance to address and accommodate these first.
Performing an oral cancer screening by observing and checking the mouth, insides of your cheeks, jaw, neck and lymph nodes. Although oral cancer is fairly rare, it is customary that we do this for every patient as a preventative measure for something you might not be able to notice yourself.
Check your x-rays and have new ones taken if they are not up to date. Check out our blogs for more information about the innovative radiograph equipment at Bell Harbour Dental.
Perform a cleaning, removing any built up plaque and calculus and, if you choose, applying materials to help prevent cavities and tooth decay such as fluoride and sealants.
A visit from the doctor to review the hygienists findings and to check in on the status and health of your teeth and gums.
Receive your famous dental goodie bag with sample toothpastes, floss and a new toothbrush.
It takes a diverse and highly equipped team to run a dental office. Hygienists are one of these roles and a necessary component of sustaining a superb and healthy smile for the rest of your life. We hope that this has helped you understand what they do and what you can expect from a hygienist at your next dental hygiene appointment.
