How Do Dental Implants Work?

A dental implant is a prosthetic tooth that is anchored into the jawbone. The process works by having the dentist assess your oral health and the state of your mouth. From there, they will advise you on whether or not implants are a viable solution for your tooth loss needs. Because the implants have to be anchored into the jaw, some prep work needs to happen first.

The dentist will first remove any remaining teeth that may be problematic before the installation of implants can begin. If teeth must be removed, they must heal before moving forward with the procedure.

The installation of the titanium post that the tooth will sit on comes first. The post is screwed into the jawbone, which will eventually fuse with the bone, creating a natural resting point for a prosthetic tooth. This will need to heal before moving on to the next process step. Once the posts have healed, the prosthetic teeth can be placed on the post. The tooth portion is a cap placed on top of what is known as an abutment. The abutment is made to fit each post and may vary depending on the tooth placed on it. Once the prosthetic tooth is placed, the process is complete.
