What Are the Different Types of Tooth Extractions?

Most folks may not realize this, but when it comes to dentistry, there are two different types of tooth extractions.

Simple Extractions

Simple extractions are as they sound. This happens when going to the dentist and having a tooth pulled. A tooth may need to be pulled or extracted for many reasons, such as damage to the root system or the tooth breaking, so a dental crown cannot restore it.

The dental may use a pair of forceps, dental pliers, or even their own hands to remove the tooth depending on where it is located and how difficult it is to extract.

Complex Extractions

The second type of extraction is complex extraction. Complex extractions require the tooth to be removed, typically by surgical means. This may not require the patient to be put under or sedated, but they generally require the tooth to be cut out somehow. This is often done for teeth that don’t erupt properly or have become damaged or infected.

The most common type of complex extraction is the wisdom tooth extraction procedure many patients wind up having to have done.
